Notification icon count is wrong

I love the fact that it shows I have messages waiting, but the number is always wrong. It consistently shows that I have eight more messages than I actually have. If I have one message it shows that I have 9. If I have 3 it shows that I have 11. Yet if I have no messages it still shows 0 like it should. Can't figure out what's up.

    I have the same problem. Right now it shows that I have 7 new messages. In reality, I have none.
