Not working on my Nexus 6P, is there some setting I need to adjust?

Not working on my Motorola Maax. The option to turn it on/off is missing from the Settings. My wife's Samsung Note 4 has the option listed in Settings so I know where it should be located, but it is not there.

Turn app badges on or off
On your homescreen, tap and hold the wallpaper image.
Tap Settings.
Tap either Enable badge notifications or Disable badge notifications.

The message count does not appear on the home icon. I am using a note 5 is there a fix for this?

Showing unread messages badge on homescreen icon when there are zero unread messages. Mark all as Read does not fix the problem.... Galaxy S3 Neo, Android 4.4.2

The number of unread messages was appearing on my home icon, but after recent phone update (galaxy s6) it no longer appears. Off topic, but the icon at the top of the screen wont go away sometimes after ive read a message

Yes, unread count on badge is not working for me either.

Counter stuck. Showing all time 1 unread text message within main icon on home screen.
