Is SharePoint Online Actually Backed up by Microsoft?
Quick question for anyone managing M365 do you treat SharePoint Online as "already backed up"?
Many people do since Microsoft 365 has version history, and recycle bins. But none of them is actually a backup. SharePoint version history is per-item and limited by time (up to 155 days for files in default settings) or storage (sites set to 10 GB per site). The same goes for recycle bins (site collection recycle bin is emptied 93 days by default). Finally, retention policies are for regulatory compliance, not for point-in-time backup of SharePoint data. None of the above will save you if your SharePoint content was encrypted by ransomware or a site collection was deleted erroneously.
So, do you back up SharePoint separately? And if yes, what do you look for in a backup solution? Granular restore points, version control, delta passes so that you do not have to back up everything every day? And where are your backups stored? On another tenant with the folder hierarchy preserved?
I'm considering using Kernel SharePoint Backup that supports SharePoint Online as well as SharePoint 2013/2016/2019. It also backs up sites, libraries, lists, version history, and permissions, with delta passes and filters, no size limits.
What do you think, and what are you using?
