Don't pop ads right under my finger a millisecond before it touches the screen!!!
When I see a new text and open this app, you know exactly when and where my finger is going to touch the screen - it's a predictable and consistent pattern. So when an ad slides into that spot, perfectly timed to show up AFTER I've committed to tapping right there, it feels like evil UI. Don't do evil UI. I don't know if it's intentional but it comes off as sneaky, annoying, and unethical. Your advertiser is paying for a false click, and it erodes my trust and affinity in your product.
TL;DR - I considered paying the measly $2 or whatever to remove the ads, but this makes me want to just switch products out of spite. :)

Couldn't agree more. And don't be fooled, this is very intentionally planned! They make their money on those ad clickthroughs, so this boosts their numbers and robs their advertisers of hard earned dollars as well as ruining their user experience, but it keeps their lights on so it will continue. Time to find a more honest app
