Have an option to turn off emoticons being turned into emojis in messaging.
In messages emoticons such as :) are turned into emojis and there's no way to stop it.

Idiotic emojis. Please add a turn off feature for those of us who have no use for them and/or hate the little b*stards. I'm a Pro user but will definitely go elsewhere if there's no change.

I have precisely the opposite problem - emoticons are shown as their plain ASCII representation instead of the "standard" Android emoticons being displayed. The free messaging apps all have this functionality, so why doesn't Textra?
I've paid for the full version and I've even installed the "Textra Emoji - Android Style" in an effort to get them to display, but to no avail.
PLEASE add this feature as a switchable option for those of us who were rather fond of the simple emoticons (without having to resort to the ridiculous craze of Emojis).

+1 for the option to display ASCII as emoji (as done in Chomp and older versions of Textra)

Just trying out the app but I never ever use emojis. If there is no way to turn them off or at least re order the options on the + bar I will not keep the app. When does emojis. Emojis come up first on + bar?

Yeah it annoys me whenever I type happy or some word there is an emoji showing up in the bar. Whenever I type the word love there is a heart emoji that pops up. I'd like to have an option to turn it off. I paid the app to annoy me. lol

I second chrisjust's comment.
In earlier versions the characters were parsed to display an emoji in the message, but this has been turned off.
I prefer seeing these emojis. -

I would like this to be an option as well. My wife prefers to see the little emoji when I send emoticon text. I prefer to see the actual :-) I just finally got her to switch to Android from her iphone and she liked that her phone converted my :-) to a little emoji picture.

The emoji images are tiny and very difficult to distinguish. And because I can't see how they were typed, I cannot create the same emoticon when I write back! If I use the emoji character, that's a special character, which breaks the entire message (it becomes limited to only 70 characters). It seems crazy that the other party can send me a message that the app prevents me from figuring out how to send back.

Please create toogle option for converting text like :-) to emojis. It is just stupid to turn off this option completely. Some of us like seeing emojis. A lot of people doesn't have smartphones so enable/disable option for converting text to emojis is something it should be done. Please consider this!

please add this option

Please turn this feature off. some people can't see the emojis at all, so it comes up as a blank text or they completely misconstrue what I'm saying without the visual. This has caused more than one "misunderstanding" lately...

To add to this... I have contacts who don't use smart phones who can't even open my texts because of 'unrecognised' characters, i.e. emojis which I never intended to send.

While I understand the importance of supporting emoji, I find simple emoticons more appealing most of the time. When I type or receive a simple :-) I would prefer to see that, not be forced to see the modern equivalent. I do enjoy everything else about the app, but being unable to keep things simple with basic characters may make me go back to other messaging apps.

I switched back to the default android messaging app after using textra for a few hours. I really like many of the features (particularly the color customization and group text organization), however the inability to turn off emojis is a deal breaker for me. They look so juvenile.
If an option is added to remove emojis, I will definitely switch back to textra as my default messaging app.

There are more substantial reasons to support this.
Smileys work because they represent generic faces. That makes them adaptable. The idea is you end up recognizing the people you're communicating with behind those smileys.
For instance, if my girl texts me something and ends with :-), I can imagine her smile. With a green monster, sorry, I can't.
An abstract face works, it frees my imagination. A specific face doesn't, it constrains me.
"Smileys" as a pop culture meme would never have happened with green monsters. Nobody would adopt them. The only respectable smileys are the original yellow round face and the punctuation smileys used in old text messages. All the rest of the crazy stuff and weird, colorful, animated smileys used in Internet forums, etc., and now in Smartphones, are niche options of specific users. They should not be forced on anyone.
This is not just an issue of graphic preference, it's the actual smiling power that's at stake here... :-)
We even need to argue that text smileys need to be the default.
Even if I have the option in my phone to turn off green monsters, how can I safely smile to someone via text message when I suspect my smile will be turned into a green monster when it reaches my friend? Argh.
Tinkering with what I communicate is not right. Even if it is just tinkering with details. The art of Text messaging is very much about details.

I agree. Elaborate emoticons are annoying. I'd like to have a choice in the matter.
