Use custom notification sounds from Contacts app
Rather than having to redefine custom notification sounds for each person in the Textra app (after getting an initial message from them), use the custom notification sounds defined in the native contacts app.

i really would like to have a ring tone notify me when i recieve a message. I missed out on Football Tickets because textre does not have a way to set up ring tones on an android phone.

On my Samsung S10, I finally figured it out. It's similar to what "Anonymous" posted on September 118, 2021:
It can be done, but it is not intuitive:1. Long hold the contact in Textra. This will select that contact
2. Click the three dots and choose customize.
3. Click notifications.
4. Click the rectangular "Android Settiings" button.
(found right found right under "repeat notifications"
5. Scroll down and click on "Sound"
7. Choose the sound you want for that contact.
8. back out only using the back arrow that's in the upper left hand corner. (important)
When you get back to the initial customize menu, the back arrow goes away and you need to click the X in the upper right hand corner. You have now set a custom notification sound for that contact.

Click the three dots and choose customize.
Click notifications.
Click the Android notifications button.
Scroll down and click advanced. From there you can set them individually. On my old phone it was right in Textra's menus but I'm guessing newer versions of Android force the hoops.

How do I set a custom sound in Textra for a contact?

This option did dissapear. That was the only reason I started using Textra. I wanted a different notification tone for each person in my contact list. I cant understand why they would delete that option in the new update.

Yes, it did dissapear

Yes this option seems to have disappeared as of the latest update and this was honestly the main reason for downloading Textra. It worked before but when I switched to the Samsung s20 it seems to have disappeared.

This ability has disappeared. I have always set up notification groups like work family clubs mates etc to ensure that each group had a unique message tone (and then a unique individual tone for the missus) - so work texts can be ignored in the evening and mates calls can be ignored during the day without needing to look at the phone. this was available on every phone i have ever owned including all my old Nokias - why have samsung now removed this on their later phones? My samsung nexus and S3 and s4 and s5 all had this. But not my new s8 or s10.

Individual contacts should follow contact setting. But I do like the idea of being able to have a group chat all use the same sound. But I also like the idea of letting each person in a chat have a different tone. Hmmm... new customization option? 😊

It didn't disappear. Open (or create) a conversation with a contact you want to customize. Tap the down-arrow in upper right, then "Customize this conversation", then "Notification Sound", and select your tone. :-)

What you have to do is add the files to your notifications folder.
Go to myfiles>internal storage>notifications copy files there and they should pop up when you select the notification sound.
I am using a Samsung S9 to do it so it worked for me. -

Ability to select specific text notification sound in Contacts app disappeared with latest update. Very unhappy about this!!!

Hunh. I only have the ability on my phone to set ringtones in contacts, so I have to set my Textra notifications anyway.
Maybe it's my phone (Moto X PE) or maybe it's bc I have the stock txt app disabled? -

Please use assigned ringtones from contacts by default and still allow the in-app customization. Maybe add a button to not import customized ringtones if someone really wanted to do them over/separate them in apps.

Not working on my Note 8.... I will delete if I can't customize the notification tones.

Would be nice but doesn't work on Samsung note 7. I have custom sounds set in contacts, and works in stock text app. Doesn't work in textra

Yes, it'd be nice if we can just define our settings in ONE place. Sometimes too much functionality is just that, TOO MUCH. I'm with Jon and others in that I define my notifications with groups and not individual contacts
-
Jon commented
I want this still, mostly because we have to set individual sounds for groups and not contacts. Very silly, I prefer knowing who texted me by sound even within a group message.

Please open Textra SMS > Long hold your desired contact in the Conversation List Screen > Press 3 dots > Override Default Settings > Configure to your liking.
Not inherently applied and doesn't address the initial complaint, but you can configure per contact without much fuss.

I think that would be easiest. I had them custom and now with this app that is useless
