On my Samsung S10, I finally figured it out. It's similar to what "Anonymous" posted on September 118, 2021:
It can be done, but it is not intuitive:

    1. Long hold the contact in Textra. This will select that contact
    2. Click the three dots and choose customize.
    3. Click notifications.
    4. Click the rectangular "Android Settiings" button.
(found right found right under "repeat notifications"
    5. Scroll down and click on "Sound"
    7. Choose the sound you want for that contact.
    8. back out only using the back arrow that's in the upper left hand corner. (important)
When you get back to the initial customize menu, the back arrow goes away and you need to click the X in the upper right hand corner.

You have now set a custom notification sound for that contact.
