Integrate it with Google Voice.
When you get a text message to Google Voice Textra should automatically load messages from the GV app (or, if its possible, directly from GV account) and you should be able to reply from within Textra and choose from which number to send the message from. That is you should be able to choose to either send it via GV or your carrier
Not really our thing.

This is a very hilarious thread (if not a little sad)
Please, for you experts out there,do you know if the fix with saving the seemingly random number that you get (from Google Voice) to the correct contact will insure that *your* reply will indeed get to the right person? And if so, will this work again next time they text you, say in a few days? Or, if you pick up a thread from a few days back where they had not texted you in the interim?
Sorry, but I know very little about SMS. Thanks! -

By the way, what kind of answer is that, Max? Maybe you've been fired by now, because if SMS isn't really your thing, you're confused.

Alpha's comments work. Set up textra as your default; send a text from GV. Store the new incoming number that comes with the reply to the existing contact. Yeah, it's cludgy, but it works and you can use the sms app that you want (textra).

Is SMS Textra's thing yet?

So, folks, I have had my GV messaging working with Textra for a few years, here is what I did, install Textra, not a whole lot your have to configure there, perhaps the T-mobile Wifi calling fix? If you are on T-mobile that is. Then change the default messaging application to Textra. Then install Google Voice app and change in the settings "linked numbers" and put in your carrier's phone #. Then in the "messages" section of settings ensure the "message notifications" is OFF, because you want Textra to pick it up, and by linking your GV # to your carrier number it should pop-up on Textra. Now, send the first message to your spouse/parent/child using GV first, the reply should come into Textra, but the number is all weird because GV is not a true carrier and it just assigns a random # to the text being sent to your GV# which Textra picked up. Copy that number and add to the existing contact, you only have to do this once and next time the person texting you it will state their name. This works the same if someone texted you first to your GV# without you initiating it, a random #, just assign it to the existing contact. Recently I changed my carrier # so I had to update both apps again to get it to work, otherwise, uninstall and reinstall both to fix. Good luck!

just adding another voice to this: Google Voice texting behaves exactly the same way as regular SMS except that it comes from a different phone number and transmits over data.
it's NOT the same thing as voicemail. It's a SMS service.
so "not really our thing" makes zero sense.
I can understand something like "Google doesn't have an API so anything we do would be a hack." That's an okay response.
But seriously? "Not really our thing" ?

The incredulous lack of Google Voice support years later makes this a very easy app to uninstall right away. Done and done won't come back

It's now 2016, 2 1/2 years since the official response in this top-ranked thread.
The number of GV users have increased exponentially.
Please reconsider.
I much prefer the Textra interface but, no integration w/ GV kills it for me.

I receive text messages using my google voice number exclusively. It's there no way to receive those messages using textra?

Google Voice (SMS/MMS service) is not the same as Google Now (voice interaction). If you link your phone with Google Voice, you should be able to do what you want to use your phone, and Textra, to interact with people through Google Voice. I wouldn't want to work with Google Voice as a developer, either. It's pretty outdated.
