as long as its optional, I'm all for it! I wouldn't use it, but others could. so a little check box for the feature would be awesome.

Yes! I totally want this. I also want the keyboard to be hidden when I open a thread for reading. (See my new suggestion to "automatically hide the keyboard".) Make this a configurable option to satisfy the whiners who don't understand why this is needed.

It's a frequent PITA. Days of cramming as much info as possible into 160 characters is OVER. Most of my texts turn into dialogs, as though the speech were live.
I would also like to see the mic icon be appointed to Google speech-to-text. Would allow option of not having to open keyboard at all! -

This is a nearly pointless feature. If you are finished with a conversation after typing a message, you can simply press home to go home, swipe left to go back to the conversation list, or using multitasking to switch to another app. Many users send several messages in sequence at times, and having to reopen the keyboard each time would be extremely frustrating and be a very slowing hindrance.

This should be an option, and only an option.

I think the same as Matthew, Hangouts is a bad and annoying example of this. It would be better left to the user's preference if it feels right for other people that way.
